If you’re an artist looking to expand your knowledge on Color Theory and Light; this is definitely a must video to check out. If you have trouble getting your images to pop, or maybe they look to flat and saturated, or have trouble deciding what colors to use for a painting, or maybe you think you feel you have to use every color in your paint collection? Jason Manley gives a great presentation on Color Theory, gives great examples from the Old Masters approaches to handling light and color. He also gives advice and examples of how color theory and light are used in blockbuster films and video games.

COLOR AND THE THEORY OF LIGHT is one of the most elusive courses in education. We will be delving deeply into the importance of lighting theory for illustration, concept design, Fine Art, 3D, film, games, comics, and visual media of all kinds. Communicating the visual feeling of light, and depth of mood is of the utmost importance when making art, no matter the field or industry. Accurate visual, abstract, and emotional qualities of color will be focused on. We will cover basic, intermediate and advanced color theory as directly related to making visual art. Students will learn how to create focal areas, pictorial space through color movements and atmospheric perspective as well as narrative color control for precise and purposeful visual storytelling.

Best instruction workshops to master ZBrush

I’ve checked out a lot of instruction on learning Z Brush; from tutorials in books, ebooks, magazines, forums, dvds, you tube, etc. I can honestly say after watching several free webinars from Ryan Kingsley, you will find the best resources and instruction on not only the program but, you will learn a lot of theory you can take into drawing, understanding form, the human body, workflow from a professional approach, and you will gain confidence in learning to sculpt in 3D if you’re new at it like I am.

What really tuned me into Ryan’s amazing teaching was checking out a couple of his you tube videos. The first one was anatomy 2.0, the other was Anatomy 2.0 going pro. Check out the videos for yourself, I’m sure you’ll agree and start learning Z Brush right away.

Drawing The Foot Anatomy Re-Visited

February 28, 2012

This is the last installment of the mini anatomy studies on 8.5 x 11″ sketch paper. I used the Riven Phoenix method of general measuring and used Rubins anatomy figure drawing book to ge a more accurate depiction of the bones and muscles. The next stage will be to draw the human skeletons on larger paper; maybe 18×24″ to really get the smaller details that I would like to get to.

This is part III of layering the muscles over the bones of the legs. The leg, like the arm is very complex. It best to find the larger shapes that make up the overall form and structure of the leg.

I’m back with another mini anatomy study featuring the hand on a 8.5″x11″ sketch book. I merged what I learned with Riven Phoenix on drawing the hand proportions; from their I used Rubins book on anatomy for reference to add in the muscle, bone, and tendon details.

Marshall Vandruff – Human Anatomy at The Art Department

The course’s focus is an introduction to observe & invent the human figure; it includes over 200 slides of great art with commentary and comparisons between anatomy plates and finished works. The course showcases the work and teaching of George Bridgman, and his influence on illustrators such as Frank Frazetta.

Also, what makes this anatomy workshop unique is, the way Vandruff teaches you to really observe anatomy by showing the contrast of two completely different approaches to studying anatomy. One approach is the form and simple shapes; second more completed and finely detailed renderings from another artist. Lastly, he shows a way to quickly remember the names of the bones and muscles as well as where they’re located.

Drawing The Arm Re-Visited

Here is the third anatomy installment of the re-visited series. the arm is complex and has so many layers of overlapping muscles. I decided to do a 8.5×11 inch page filled with various angles of the arm, including the muscles. Again, I plan to do larger more detailed studies of the anatomical parts of the body after this series. Take a look at where the bones curve at the halfway mark(if you divide the arm in half).

Drawing The Skull and Muscles Re-Visited

Its been a year or so since I worked along with the Riven Phoenix Figure Invention series. I decided to re-visit anatomy and study from several anatomy and figure drawing books. I feel this time around I’m more familiar and experienced with studying and understanding the head. My goal is to be very fluid and consistent with my anatomy studies;  and enough understanding and mastery to teach it, and excel in my concept drawings and illustrations.

Moving forward, I decided to do a study of the skull from several views. The muscle drawings were not as detailed as I would have liked to illustrate, considering all the studies were on a small 8.5×11 sketch sheet. I plan to do a large, and clearer  detailed studies of the muscles and skulls soon. One last note, I also improved on the form and extruding the skull(especially the side view) as the earlier studies of the skull were a bit to narrow and short for the back half of the skull.

Anatomy Lecture Skeleton and Body Muscles

I checked out this website from the Artist Zack Petroc. Zack is a gifted individual in the art and entertainment field; working with Disney and Paramount to name a couple. He has some excellent resources on the human anatomy, that he created in Z Brush. He gives an hour lecture on the human skeleton and muscles as well as 3D models of the skeleton and muscles to study inside the Z Brush 3D modeling program.

Artist and Instructor Michael Hampton is releasing a revised 2011 edition of his remarkable book on figure drawing, anatomy, design and invention. I was very pleased and gained so much insight from Hampton’s mastery, experience, and theory on the human figure.  This book is hard to get a hold of since its’ self published by the author. My advise is to get it as soon as it hits the online stores. Also, This is a must have book for anyone that want to take their figure drawing to the next level.

Originally published in August of 2009, this book gives a process-based approach to learning to draw the figure. The book has received much praise, and is used as a reference text by schools and animation/game art companies alike. More info
